Computing Tips

Here are some tips to keep your computer running smoothly.

Keep an eye on temporary files

Watch the contents of C:\Windows\Temp\ and C:\Windows\Prefetch and empty them out every once in a while.Windows uses these for shortcuts to files use often, but once they get too full, they can slow your computer down. To prevent this, clean these folders out every once in a while.

Turn off what you don't need

If you're running Windows, next time your computer seems slow, go to Start, then Run… , then type "MSCONFIG" and press Enter. This will bring up a window that allows you to disable some of the programs that start automatically. Click the Startup tab, and start unchecking things you don't need. Be sure to only disable things you know for sure you won't need.

Defragment your hard drive

This keeps your files all in one place, literally, on the hard drive. If your files are in several pieces across the hard drive, your computer will be slow in accessing those files. Defragmenting addresses this by joining these pieces.

Don't save ANYTHING in C:\ if you can help it

Save things in a folder but NEVER in the C:\ root as too many items here can slow down the computer. Save your documents in other folders if possible.

Always keep more than 2 GB free on your Windows drive

When you have a lot of programs running, the computer extends its memory onto the hard drive. The more free space you have on your hard drive, the easier it is for Windows to manage the memory that's been written there.
